Agricultural turnover between Ukraine and the EU increased by almost 40%

Mutual trade in agricultural products between Ukraine and the European Union in 2022 was $16.5 billion. This is the highest figure during the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union, which exceeded the previous record figure of 2021 ($11.9 billion) by 39%. says the report of the Institute of Agrarian Economics, writes agronews.ua.
The surplus amounted to $9.7 billion.
The main European partners for Ukraine last year were Poland, Romania, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany and Hungary. These countries make up 77% of the total domestic trade turnover of agri-food products with the EU, explained the deputy director of the National Research Center of the IAE, academician of the National Academy of Sciences Mykola Pugachev.
Last year, Ukraine imported agricultural products from EU member states worth about $3.38 billion. This is almost 17% less than in 2021.
In 2022, Ukraine spent the most — $308 million — on the purchase of beverages, mainly alcoholic beverages, from the EU.
Remains and waste, animal feed products were purchased for $291 million.
Various food products, extracts and concentrates were imported for $290 million.
A noticeable share (6%) in domestic imports from the EU in 2022 was once again occupied by dairy products, although last year they were imported from abroad by 35% less than in 2021 - in the amount of $219 million. At the same time, various cheeses turned out to be the defining product in the imports of this group , which were purchased last year for $180 million, the scientist informed.
The supply of tobacco and tobacco products from Europe decreased by 43% compared to 2021 — to $217 million.
The volume of deliveries to the Ukrainian market of finished grain products amounted to $207 million.
Last year, the volume of imports of meat together with offal amounted to $207 million.
In 2022, for the first time in the structure of domestic imports of agricultural products, significant value volumes fell on vegetables. This type of agricultural products was purchased abroad in the amount of $183 million.
In general, these groups of products took about 57% of the value of food imports from the European Union.
"Given the current situation, the European Union will remain the main partner in the foreign agricultural trade of Ukraine this year, because under any circumstances, the absence of tariffs on products from our country, well-developed logistics routes and the lack of alternatives of this regional association for road and rail transport will contribute to the strengthening of the economic integration between the parties," concluded Mykola Pugachev.
