Despite the high yield, the farmers of Cherkassy are reducing corn crops
Corn in Cherkasy remains one of the most productive crops. In 2023, the region collected a record amount of grain — more than four million tons. But farmers refuse to sow it due to difficulties with sales. Sospilne informs.
"For the year 2023, Cherkasy region harvested a record crop — it was 4.6 million tons. It took second place in terms of productivity. The average yield was 7.2 t/ha. Compared to last year, 5.98 t/ha. According to the conditions of our region, corn is the best plant," said Roman Kosenko, director of the regional department of agro-industrial development.
In 2024, the yield is predicted to be even higher. However, some farmers refuse to sow it. Ivan Ponomar, an agrarian from the village of Dmytrivka, is currently counting the losses. He left all last year's corn crop in the fields. Growing corn became unprofitable for him.
"I am in a very big disadvantage. Discusted, then plowed, cultivated, sowed, hired a seeder. And then it went: seed material, fertilizers, plant protection, spraying, then I did top dressing twice, and as a result, I still have zero at all. There is no profit. Losses this year will be big," explained the farmer.
But the fields will not be idle this year. Oil crops will be sown - soy, rapeseed, sunflower.
Agrarian Volodymyr Drach cut corn crops in half. Instead, he added rapeseed to the crop rotation.
"I have about four hundred hectares. "I usually sow 100 hectares of wheat, 80 hectares of sunflower, 80 hectares of corn, a little barley," he said.
The farmer is also trying to grow niche crops. Brewing barley was sown for the first time this year.
"I sowed 5 hectares here, purely for breeding. It may be possible to conclude some kind of contract with brewing companies. My advantages are that I have my own equipment. I have my own planters, tractors. There are granaries to store and grain trucks to transport. Before the war, we managed to purchase a combine harvester under the program "Available loans 5-7-9%", the state gave us this opportunity," said the agrarian.
As a reminder, the Ukrainian Grain Association forecasts the corn harvest in 2024 at the level of 26.3 million tons, which is 3 million tons less than last year — 29.6 million tons.
