Frosts caused significant damage to wheat, barley, rapeseed and peas — NAAS
Frosts up to -2°C, and in some places up to -9°C, which were observed during the last days in the North, East and South of Ukraine, led to significant damage to wheat, barley, rapeseed and peas.
This was told by the chief researcher of the Plant Breeding Institute named after V.Ya. Yuryeva National Academy of Sciences Serhii Avramenko.
As the scientist noted, winter wheat crops in the specified regions, which were still in the development stage, may have losses at the level of 20-30%, while those that were already at the harvesting stage, will potentially have a higher level of losses.
"A similar situation is observed with rapeseed crops. Pea crops will also have significant losses due to frosts, because they affected the crops in the flowering phase," Serhii Avramenko explained.
At the same time, he added that the situation in the central part of Ukraine and in the western regions is better, since there were no such strong frosts.
"But it should be taken into account that these regions also have smaller cultivated areas," the scientist noted.
