In Ukraine, less than 150 thousand hectares of land will be irrigated in the 2023 season

The total area of land preparation that is planned to be irrigated in Ukraine in 2023 is 147,000 hectares. This was reported by the Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy of the VRU.

"The 2023 irrigation season in the South has started on time. It was preceded by planned preparation of reclamation infrastructure facilities for operation in the growing season. Thus, as of the beginning of April, preparations for the irrigation season are carried out by 7 organizations belonging to the State Fisheries Agency (5 in Odesa region, 1 in Mykolaiv region, and 1 in Zaporizhia region)," said Taras, First Deputy Head of the State Agency for Land Reclamation and Fisheries of Ukraine cat

According to him, 340 km of pipelines, 309 km of canals, 131 pumping stations, 448 pumping units and 330 hydraulic structures were repaired in the irrigation systems.

So, in the Odesa region, water has already been supplied for irrigation on an area of more than 1,200 hectares. In addition, preparations for the irrigation season of the Lyman irrigation system with a total area of about 1.5 thousand hectares are underway on the de-occupied territory in the Berislav district of the Kherson region.

"There is also an active campaign to conclude contracts with agricultural producers for the provision of water supply services for irrigation needs," the official added.

As the commercial director of the Variant Irrigation company Ilya Zhemelinsky said in a comment for Kurkul.com, this year some Ukrainian farmers had significant difficulties at the start of the irrigation season.

"The main problems that prevented our clients from starting irrigation in a timely and high-quality manner were the lack of availability of water and electricity, problems with unmined territories. Another significant problem faced by Ukrainian agricultural producers is the lack of service and the availability of imported components," the expert said.

So this spring Variant Irrigation saw a significant increase in demand for components and service support for companies that previously worked with foreign brands.

"Having components locally in warehouses in Ukraine, we were able to provide a solution to farmers' problems in the shortest possible time, which is especially important for farms during the vegetation irrigation period. Despite significant difficulties, I would like to note that almost 70% of our customers have fully or partially started the irrigation season," added Ilya Zhemelinsky.

We will remind you that in 2014-2017 there was a decrease in the land that was actually irrigated from 0.51 million hectares to 0.46 million hectares, or by 9.8%. But since 2018 (0.46 million hectares), the amount of irrigated land began to grow, and in 2020, the largest area was irrigated — 0.55 million hectares. In 2021, about 600,000 hectares of agricultural land were actually irrigated.

In Ukraine, there are 5.49 million hectares of reclaimed land, including 2.18 million hectares of irrigated land and 3.31 million hectares of drained land with appropriate land reclamation infrastructure. Almost 19 million hectares of arable land need constant irrigation, and 4.8 million hectares require water regulation.
