In Ukraine, plant varieties from the EU and the USA have begun to be registered under a simplified procedure

The Ministry of Agricultural Policy has started the state registration of plant varieties registered in the European Union and the United States of America under a simplified procedure. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.

From now on, farmers can introduce into agricultural technology the latest varieties that have successfully passed state tests in the EU or the USA and are included in the general catalog of EU varieties or confirmed by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV).

"We simplify the registration of plant varieties as much as possible. The applicant submits an application for registration of a new variety. Employees of the Ministry of Agricultural Policy independently establish data on the presence of such a variety in the general catalog of varieties of the European Union or UPOV. If its presence is confirmed, the decision on state registration is made within 15 days. At the same time, at the request of the applicant, the qualification examination of the variety may not be carried out," Taras Vysotskyi, the First Deputy Minister of Agriculture, commented on the innovation.

The first 97 varieties of agricultural crops have already been entered into the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine under a simplified procedure.

The new variety registration mechanism was developed to implement the provisions of the Law of Ukraine "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine on Bringing Legislation in the Field of Protection of Rights to Plant Varieties and Seed Production and Nurseries into Compliance with the Provisions of European Union Legislation."
