The scientist predicts a shortage of the wheat crop

Against the background of an abnormal increase in temperature and lack of precipitation in the spring period, there is a decrease in the productivity of plants of winter grain crops in many regions of Ukraine. This was told by Dr. S.-G. of Sciences, chief researcher of the Institute of Plant Breeding named after V.Ya. Yuryeva National Academy of Sciences Serhii Avramenko.

According to him, farmers had a good harvest of winter wheat last year, but there was no price for it.

"This year, I predict that the opposite will happen - there will be no harvest, but there will be a price. This year, the vegetation of winter crops recovered very early, and usually when the vegetation recovers early, a very high yield is always formed, since there are more chances of the formation of additional shoots of the bush in the spring period. This was the case in many farms. However, then there was an abnormal warming and a rapid increase in temperature, during which the plants grew, but did not develop," explained the scientist.

According to him, only one of the four or five bush shoots turned out to be productive. In addition, against the backdrop of a rapid increase in air temperature, there was practically no precipitation.

As Serhii Avramenko added, the situation is "deplorable" in the fields where nitrogen fertilizers were not applied. The plants are pale green, short, and productivity should not be expected from them.

"With normal rainfall, these shoots would be productive. Now they are simply dying and there is no way you can change the situation," the scientist noted.

According to him, a similar situation existed in 2018. Then the first rains fell in the phase of the flag leaf, approximately in the middle of May.

As Serhiy Avramenko added, currently the potential of wheat is approximately 2-2.5 t/ha. If there are rains, then a maximum of 3 t/ha.

"And now what will happen to the price of wheat - we have, as usual, when there is a lot of it - there is no price. This year, the situation will change partly in favor of farmers, as there will be a large crop shortage. Against this background, the price of wheat and all other crops will increase. Even those who for certain reasons did not sell the 2023 harvest will win. This year they will sell it at one and a half or even two times more expensive. So don't rush to sell. Believe me, its price will increase. This is my subjective prediction. Although it may be wrong, the situation is approximately the same in most fields of the Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and partly Poltava regions," Serhiy Avramenko concluded.
