Ukrainian river ports can become an alternative to the grain corridor - Marchuk

The state of Ukraine and farmers are working to ensure that the "grain corridor" has an alternative, in particular, the development of Ukrainian river ports continues.

The Deputy Chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council, Denys Marchuk, said this, hromadske.radio writes.

"Both the state of Ukraine and farmers are working to use alternative ways in opposition to the "grain corridor". This means using corridors of solidarity: and not only by land route, that is, not only by railways and roads, but now we are betting on the development of small ports across rivers. In particular, through the Danube. Because the potential there, as practice has shown, is quite high. A clear example of this in numbers is that in May, about 3 million tons of grain were exported through the Danube ports, these volumes even exceeded the amount of grain that went through the Black Sea that month," he explained.

According to Denys Marchuk, there is potential for the export of grain through river ports.

"This can be done by improving the infrastructure of cargo reception directly in river ports on the territory of Ukraine. Negotiations are also ongoing with our Romanian partners to deepen the mouth of the Danube river - Bystra. As a result of the deepening of this estuary, we will be able to increase the flow of deep-sea vessels that can carry more grain. Thus, the amount of exported grain will increase, and logistics will become cheaper," the expert added.

We would like to remind you that the Government of Ukraine, together with participants of the grain market, have developed a number of alternative strategies that will make it possible to continue the export of grain crops in the event of the termination of the "grain corridor".

Also, in the state budget for 2023, UAH 20 billion is provided for the potential insurance of ships with Ukrainian grain, which will be ready to continue their work in the absence of a "grain corridor".

By the way, the grain agreement expires on July 18. As the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmytro Peskov stated, there is no chance of a "grain agreement" after this date, and Moscow sees no reason for its extension.
