Wheat is sent to the elevators mainly as fodder wheat - a specialist

This year, grain wheat arrives at the elevators mainly as fodder. This was told by the operations director G.R. Agro Artem Rempen in the blog "In standby mode - what Ukrainian grain producers have adjusted to" on Elevatorist.com.

According to him, in the Dnipro Oblast, the percentage of food wheat in the gross harvest does not yet exceed 20, and this is still a rather optimistic figure. A similar situation is observed in the Kharkiv region, although in some areas the percentage reaches 50. In addition, rains during the harvest not only delay the harvesting process itself, but also contribute to a decrease in the quality of grain - the conditions for the development of fungi and insects are the most suitable.

"In Vinnytsia this year, in order to avoid grain damage by fungi and beetles after the rains, some farmers are going to the expense of drying — they believe that it is better to harvest wheat with a moisture content of 16-17%, but undamaged by fusarium and insects. And after removing 3% by drying, food wheat can be obtained," said Artem Rempen.

The same producers who preferred natural drying in the field often lose both in quality and quantity this year.

"In the field, the quality is falling. After the rains, weeds grow actively, insects and fungi multiply. Farmers wait for the wheat to dry after the rains, and often dry it - a light rain has passed, the equipment does not enter the field, and after that rain there are 2 days of heat at 28-32°C. Such wheat is then brought to the elevator, it has a moisture content of 11-11.5%, in a flat place 3% of the live weight is lost," the specialist added.

Therefore, in the conditions of local sales, the absence of a formed market, prices even for food wheat remain low. At the elevators, prices are listed for conditional deliveries to Reni and Izmail, but it still doesn't turn out to be very optimistic - about 4,800 for food wheat. As for rapeseed prices, the situation there is a little better, the market is formed and the prices are set — $370+ in Reni and Izmail, $325-340 — on the European borders.
